When the other guys in Adam’s unit walked inside the bar, my whole body stiffened. I looked for him, expecting his blond head among the others, but he wasn’t there. The disappointment was palpable, like a punch to the gut. Maybe I should call him? No, I wanted to talk face to face. I could wait until my shift was over, it was only a few hours away. That turned out to be more difficult than I thought though. Messing up drink after drink, then smashing some glasses to boot. Bethany gave me a look, a mix of irritation and concern, and I could feel my face flame red as I swept the floor. People were giving me the eye, but I kept my gaze firmly on the broom, sweeping shards of glass into the dustpan. I really needed to get it together before I got fired. Not that Bethany would tell Carl, but still. It would be stupid to let my distracted mind keep me from doing my job properly.

At least I wasn’t working at the hospital tonight.

As the end of my shift came to a close, there was still no sign of Adam. I took the trash out, said goodbye to Bethany and started walking toward the apartment. He would probably be there, maybe he was even sleeping. It was pretty late. If he was, I hoped it wasn’t because he was avoiding me. It had kind of felt like that lately, like he came home later than usual and left for work before I was even awake. Well, no more. And he wasn’t sleeping on the damn couch either. I missed having him next to me in bed, missed the warmth of him as he pulled me in close. It was probably a bad idea to get used to falling asleep next to Adam, but I couldn’t help it. Ever since he moved to the couch, I had been sleeping like shit. No matter what came of our conversation tonight, because we were having a conversation, he could at least sleep in the bed. I thought back to my conversation with Bethany at the start of my shift. About how Adam needed space. Maybe he and I weren’t so different. I didn’t need space exactly, but I had built a wall around myself ever since things went wrong with Edward. If I wanted him to trust me, then maybe I was going to have to do the same.

There was a noise to my left, like someone stepping on a branch, and I flinched. Shaking my head, I laughed at myself. Paranoid much? It was probably just an animal, or someone on their way home from a night out. Solstice was remote, but there were still people around. There was no reason for my heart pounding away in my chest. Still, I walked faster as I turned onto a smaller street, leaving the dead center of town behind. Then I heard it.

The steps.

Behind me somewhere, I heard footsteps. Calm down, I told myself.
